The Foundation of Quality
In vacuum forming, the quality of your final part can only be as good as the tool (mold) it is formed over. Choosing the right tooling material is a balancing act between budget, expected production volume, and the required surface finish.
High-Temperature Epoxy Resins
Epoxy molds are generally created by pouring liquid resin over a master pattern (often 3D printed or carved from wood). Once cured, it forms a rigid mold.
- Best For: Prototyping and low-volume production (100 - 1,000 parts).
- Pros: Extremely fast to produce and significantly cheaper than metal.
- Cons: Epoxy does not conduct heat well. Over multiple rapid cycles, the tool retains heat, increasing cooling times and slowing down production. It will eventually degrade and chip after a few thousand cycles.
Machined Aluminum
A block of solid aluminum is CNC milled to the exact CAD specifications.
- Best For: High-volume production (10,000+ parts) and parts requiring absolute precision.
- Pros: Exceptional thermal conductivity. We can run water-cooling lines directly through the tool to rapidly cool the plastic, drastically speeding up cycle times. It yields a flawless surface finish and will last essentially forever.
- Cons: The most expensive and time-consuming upfront investment.
The Verdict

Once the product is proven and volume scales, investing in a temperature-controlled machined aluminum tool will pay for itself in increased production speed and reduced reject rates.
